Client Based Programs

Self Employment Assistance (SEA)

The Self-Employment Assistance program has been designed to assist unemployed Indigenous people to create their own business providing their concept is viable and acceptable.

Skills Development (SD)

Skills Development assists Indigenous clients to obtain skills for employment. Purchase of courses may include upgrading and literacy courses, life skills courses, occupational or skills courses including apprenticeship training etc. Skills Development does not include either high school courses or university courses, or correspondence programs.

Apprenticeship Program (AP)

The Apprenticeship Program is designed to assist unemployed Indigenous clients who are interested in apprenticeship (journeyman) certification. Clients can be assisted with on-the-job training and skills training.

Employment Assistance Service (EAS)

Employment Assistance Service is a support measure developed to assist organizations in the provision of employment services to unemployed or about to become unemployed Indigenous clients. Services can include but not limited to: Counselling - Career Action planning - Job search skills - Job Finding Clubs - Provision of Labour Market Information - Case management and follow-up - Cultural Awareness - Language - Life Resume Writing - CPR/First Aid - WHMIS

Employment Maintenance Program (EMP)

The Employment Maintenance Program has been developed to assist unemployed or about to become unemployed Indigenous clients to enhance their current skills through short term training interventions. The EMP program will assist individuals who, due to technological changes in their occupation, have lost their employment or are in danger of losing their job. This training may include computer technology, new or upgrading skill levels, work related training sessions or seminars such as communications, work ethics, interpersonal skills, etc. Employers are expected to train their own employees. This program should not be used to replace the employer's responsibility.

Work Subsidy Program (WSP)

The Work Subsidy Program is designed for hands on work experience. Wage subsidies will encourage employers to hire Indigenous clients.

Exploratory/Relocation Program (ERP)

The purpose of the ERP is to provide financial assistance to Indigenous people who have been offered employment anywhere in Canada. The ERP program can also assist unemployed people to attend a verified job interview.

Group Based Programs

Project Based/Cultural “Revitalization” (PBP)

PBP is designed to provide specific training to enter or re-enter the labour market. This training will normally be conducted in a classroom environment and will consist of formal theory training with some practical and on the job experience. Training will always be conducted by a qualified instructor(s) and if possible by a person of Mi”kmaq decent. The training must have transference of skills/abilities.

PBP can be inclusive of Cultural Revitalization Programming to support expressing, preserving, developing, revitalizing and promoting culture, language and heritage.

Community Based Programs

Job Creation Partnership (JCP)

The purpose of the Job Creation Partnership is two-fold. Firstly, it provides meaningful work activities for unemployed Indigenous people to provide them with work experience and to assist them in acquiring new skills or maintain the skills they have in periods of unemployment. Secondly, the program supports employers, community groups and communities in developing and implementing strategies for dealing with human resource requirements

Skills Links (SL)

Youth Programs

This program like the other youth programs is a client-centered program that responds to the individual needs of youth facing barriers to employment. The program offers an array of activities that can be mixed and matched to provide individualized and integrated support. Client assessment is the key to success and is used to determine the right mix of interventions, services and referrals. Youth clients who develop and implement an employment action plan are to be case managed.

Career Focus (CF)

Finding a job can be a challenge for youth. They must determine what careers are available, what their interests are, and what skills they have or need to develop. Numerous resources are available to help youth get a sense of their interest and skills as well as gain employment experience and learn about employment opportunities.

Summer Work Experience Program (SWEP)

The purpose of this program is to enable self-identified Indigenous youth residing in Nova Scotia who are returning to school or to an educational institution to have a summer job. This program will be available from May 1st to August 31st.

Special Indigenous Youth Initiatives (SIYI)

Employability Skills through Entrepreneurship: groups of young people are assisted to develop entrepreneurial skills, and to apply those skills in the planning, launching and operations of their own business.
